Chapter Seventeen

Detroit-Rocktown Supercity, 2266 A.D.

When Rhydder had been guarding their apartment and the building itself, he’d been a dark figure in the armchair in the corner, who scowled at everyone who got close. There had been no reprieve in his mood. The psi and humans who came to Marley for help had stayed away from him, on edge. Blood pressure had always been elevated when he was in the building.

So Marley’s heart had sunk when Kieran settled in the same armchair with a reading board and coffee in hand, while Gawaine stood with his arms crossed and a scowl. It was as if Rhydder had returned in spirit.

With a silent sigh, she took the first patient into the consultation room. When she emerged fifteen minutes later, Kieran was still in the chair, but things could not have been more different.

The patients waiting for her looked happier. There was no nervousness. And Karolina sat on one of the hard kitchen chairs, which she had pulled up right next to Kieran’s chair. The two of them were looking at each other silently, both of them smiling and reacting as if they were talking, while Gustavo sat on her knee and gazed up at Kieran as if he was spellbinding.

With a start, Marley realized that Karolina and Kieran were talking. They just weren’t using their mouths to do it.

“Karolina,” Marley called softly.

Karolina got up from the chair and smiled at Kieran. She passed Marley, heading into the consultation room. “He’s a keeper,” she whispered.

Kieran watched her carefully. Marley realized he was waiting for her to disapprove.

Silently, she turned back into the consultation room and shut the door.

Later in the morning, she heard laughter and quiet talking in the room beyond. When she emerged from the consultation room ten minutes later, Kieran was standing at the kitchen table. A psi she did not know was at the battered old cooking range, stirring something in one of the last cooking pots left in the old apartment section. It smelled divine.

A human male was sitting at the table, wielding a kitchen knife like a chef as he quickly sliced up the oranges she had left there. The tart smell of orange was sharp in the air, competing with the fragrant spices in the cooking pot.

Marley’s mouth watered.

“For lunch,” Kieran told her.

“Orange meringue pie for dessert,” the man at the table added.

“There are fresh eggs in the city?” she breathed, astounded.

Kieran pointed to four brown eggs sitting on the table.

“Wow.” She looked around the room. No one in the waiting area was looking blankly at the floor the way patients in waiting areas had for hundreds of years. If they were not actively working in the kitchen, they were sitting forward, watching everything. There were very few of them sitting.

“Who’s next?” she asked.

A pale, thin psi at the kitchen sink, rinsing dishes, put down the plate she was washing and wiped her hands on a towel. “Me,” she said quietly and came forward.
